Down on calloused knees

pulling weeds from an overgrown heart

many resist, their roots so deep

but “tut tut it looks like rain” will start

If it pours awhile, becoming a contender

perhaps the caked soil will soften

to aid removal of the worst offenders

which trail underneath, so often

Pour down, pour down

ease this relentless toil

wash clean the ground

lessen the inner turmoil

Eyes wet beneath the hat’s dry brim

more clearing left to do

 heart soaked through my skin

 I begin anew

I resign

(it is smart)

from this bind

(for my heart)

It is so unkind

(and other parts)

There is still time

(to begin a new chart)

Let reason go; the focus is rhyme

(press restart)

My back will align

(to release the beating of my heart)

Change Of Heart

HPIM3404

I forgive

though the texture of my heart

will never be the same

Once, it was so smooth and soft

back when I only knew

that I just wanted

to love all others

Now, I’ve learned that

such a pure simplicity

will constantly be challenged

when nothing in life

could matter more

But why couldn’t you

just let me keep believing

that the sweet pure spirit of love

 would insulate my heart

from any permanent damage?

False love comes in an array of guises

many of which affect our sight

but that which you allow to enter your heart

should make you and your world feel light

True love does not rip your soul apart

it simply fills you with joy, breath, and life

HPIM0591

No need to wrap it up

shouldn’t hide it ‘neath the tree

it’s much too special for that

anyone would have to agree

it’s okay to be seen; also heard

the perfect fit, just like a glove

the only cost a willing heart

to give the world, the gift of love

HPIM1407

If a heart has holes in it

joy leaks right through

This dampens hope

rendering it unable

to repair so many tears

Thus, hope reaches

for the protective coat

of love’s sweet embrace

before joy runs out

In union with love

hope finds strength to mend

this worn, torn heart

so once more, it can

hold joy inside

I found myself today

I had been lost in the moment

as I walked toward a distant light

I looked upward to see the most brilliant blue

but not to feel it; I breathed deeply

without holding my shallow breath

Beauty filled these brimming eyes as

I stood before an ever-changing world

I saw the hope of my future while

the despair of my past faded from view

And although death’s darkness had

stolen irretrievable bits of my heart

life firmly grasped my waiting hands
