Someday I’ll no longer be tethered

like the little blonde girl with purse of red patent leather

when someone like you stole all

her young heart’s most-valued treasures

Untethered, if ever that relentless storm

again, crashes down unmeasured

And although I’ve grown only

a small set of feathers

I now know, they are built to repel

all manner of hell; doing it really, really well

 Still stronger, they’ll grow

preparing for a case of the never-say-never

when they will lift me up

to fly freely through, any type of inclement weather

The small blue bird

always perched very near to

her older, more experienced friend on the power line

Whenever a storm brewed up a strong wind

she leaned heavily against her protector

She had no awareness of her own weight

until the dark, foreboding, day she was pushed away

causing a hard fall onto the rocky road

which rendered her unable to fly

From that day on, she stayed

alone in the brush, never to see

her dear, feathered, companion again

The little blue bird often wondered if

on that tragic day

her strong friend had merely collapsed

 from the exhaustion

of holding steady on that wire

The birdies are all here

distraction abounds

young hatchlings test wings

screeches, the sounds

We attempt to keep up

as time rushes past

but to stay in the moment

one need not move fast

All fall back, in this tree

of summer days gone by

 the new, shared with songs

’til again, some will fly

Fly, fly, fly, but wait

’til the whisper on the wind

calls you from the lee

You give

they take

you thrive

You hold tight

they let go

you fall

You stay

they fly

you are lost

They wander

you search

though not for them

They return

 you journey on

they become still

Your eyes close

you see through

they see you
